Saltwater Pool FAQ – Laguna Beach Pool Service
Saltwater pools are becoming more and more popular. Because we get lots of questions about Laguna Beach pool service for saltwater pools, we’ve put together this list of frequently asked questions.

Is the water in saltwater pools really salty? Yes and no. The level of salt in a saltwater pool is about 3,000 parts per million. The water in the ocean is about 35,000 parts per million. So the water in the pool has far less salt than the water in the ocean. Most people can’t taste salt until the levels reach 3,500 parts per million. So, if you were to taste the water in the pool it wouldn’t taste salty.
How Do Saltwater Pools Work? With traditional pool water sanitation, you add chlorine to keep the water free of bacteria and other microorganisms. With a saltwater pool, you add salt. A special cell converts the cell (through electrolysis) into free chlorine. Remember, salt is chemically sodium chloride! Saltwater pools still use chlorine, it is just generated at the salt cell.
Will Saltwater Pools Burn My Eyes? No pool water should burn your eyes. If you use the services of a professional Laguna Beach pool service, the pH and the alkalinity levels of the water in your pool should be kept at the proper levels. When the water burns your eyes or irritates your skin, it is not the chlorine. The real culprit is pH and alkalinity levels that are not correct.
Do Saltwater Pools Still Need to Be Cleaned? Just because you don’t need to add chlorine to the pool doesn’t mean it doesn’t need regular maintenance and cleaning. You should use the services of a professional Laguna Beach Pool Service like Beachside Pool Service to:
- regularly vacuum and skim the pool to remove debris,
- brush the pool walls and pool tile,
- check the water chemistry and balance as necessary
- periodically clean the chlorine-generating salt cell
In addition, the added levels of salt are more corrosive to your pool equipment. Your pumps and heaters should be made with special alloys like cupronickel that are more resistant to corrosion. Beachside Pool Service can recommend heaters for saltwater pools as well as pumps, filters, and sweeps.
Do Saltwater Pools Save Maintenance Time? You won’t have to buy, carry, or store chlorine if you have a saltwater pool. Your salt cell is a chlorine generator. It’s like having a little chlorine factory in the yard. So, you won’t need to spend your time on those activities. But your pool will still need to be maintained. Whether you do the maintenance yourself or hire a professional Laguna Beach Pool Service, saltwater pools need careful attention to the pH and alkalinity of the water. If you have a conventional pool and are looking to save do-it-yourself maintenance time, talk to Beachside Pool Service about installing an automatic chlorine injector.
Can Conventional Pools be Converted? Just because you aren’t building a new pool doesn’t mean you can’t have the convenience of a saltwater pool. Just call Beachside Pool Service at (949) 939-0023 or use the Contact Us form to request a quote. Your traditional pool can be converted to a saltwater pool for less than you think.
