Automatic Pool Cleaners

In the never-ending quest to make pool ownership easier, pool equipment manufacturers have created automatic pool cleaners. Maintaining a pool requires removal of debris, balancing water chemistry, and servicing filters, heaters and pumps. Automatic pool cleaners can’t balance the water or backwash your filter, but they can help with debris removal. Here’s how they work.

automatic pool cleaners remove debris

Suction-Side Automatic Pool Cleaners

These automatic pool cleaners use the suction generated by the pool pump to operate the pool cleaner like a vacuum cleaner. They move about the pool in a pattern that cleans the entire pool. They are popular because they are economical. They can be attached to your skimmer. Suction-side pool cleaners only work when the pool pump is on. The debris that is sucked up gets deposited in your filter system. They reduce the need for skimming the surface, but skimming is still necessary.

Pressure-Side Automatic Pool Cleaners

Pressure-side pool cleaners attach to the return line of your pool. The movement of the water creates the force that moves the cleaner around and sucks up dirt and debris. The material is collected in a bag; it does not go through the filter system. Most of these automatic pool cleaners require the use of an additional booster pump for extra power to operate the pool cleaner effectively. They don’t have an effect on the surface skimming action, but the surface still needs to be skimmed. They are more expensive than suction-side pool cleaners, but they do not increase the need to clean or backwash the filter.

Robotic Automatic Pool Cleaners

They are totally self-contained and are not attached the pool’s pump or filter. Most models can be programmed to your pool’s unique needs. The dirt and debris that gets vacuumed is up is collected directly in the cleaner. They operate whether your pool recirculating systems are on or not. These are the most expensive type of automatic pool cleaners.
