Laguna Beach Pool Service Reminds Residents to Prevent Drowning
With summer upon us, it’s time to hit the pool and hit the beaches. Beachside Pool Service, the Laguna Beach pool service that cares reminds residents and visitors to be safe around water. In Orange County, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children under the age of 5. It’s only June and already there have been 12 drownings in Orange Beach this year. Drowning is always avoidable. No child should ever lose their life to drowning.
Safety by Design
Surround your pool by a fence at least 4 feet tall on all sides. Install gates that open outwards, away from the pool. Use self-closing and self-latching gates. Install pool alarms or door alarms if you use the house as the fourth side of the fence. Install pool alarms on the side of the pool to alert you if someone goes in the pool. Door alarms let you know when a door has been opened.
If you use a pool cover, opt for a rigid pool cover. They will support the weight of a pet or child. Always completely remove the cover before using the pool. Also, be sure that you and all caregivers and family members know how to use the equipment properly. Store the equipment in it’s place when not in use.
Drain covers must conform to new safety requirements to prevent drowning by entrapment. Drowning by entrapment occurs when a swimmers hair, body part, or clothing is trapped by a faulty drain cover over the main drain. The force of suction at the main drain is so strong, you cannot break it without turning off the pump. New drain covers prevent entrapment by design. Not sure if your drain cover is safe? Talk to Beachside Pool Service about your main drain cover.
Nothing Beats a Water Watcher
A designated water watcher is one of the safest ways to protect against drowning. This adult watches all swimmers without distraction from cell phones, books, or conversation. They are trained in CPR and other lifesaving techniques. Train caregivers as water watchers.
Teach Safety
Teach your children safety around the pool and teach them to swim. Make sure your children know how to pool safely this summer. The Consumer Product Safety Commission provides a variety of materials, videos and even an app you can download to teach children of all ages about water safety.
