Is your filter sluggish? Is your pump whining or the heater straining to keep water…
Pool Equipment Repair or Replace? Part 2 The Heater
Your pool heater or pool heat pump is vital to giving you year around enjoyment of your swimming pool. Problems with your pool heater can be difficult to diagnose but easy to fix. Here are a few tips to deciding if it is time to pay for a pool equipment repair or if replacement makes sense.
A Note of Caution – Pool Heating Can Be Dangerous Business
Heating your pool requires a mix of gas, electricity, and water. These aren’t things that normally mix safely. That is why if your pool heater or heat pump isn’t operating properly, you don’t want to try to fix it yourself. Be safe and just pick up the phone and call the Orange County experts in pool equipment repair – Beachside Pool Service.
Beachside technicians are trained and have the skills and equipment necessary to safely diagnose problems with your pool equipment.
Heat Exchanger
Most of the times, when it comes to the heat exchanger, the answer to the question of equipment repair or replace will be repair!
Problems with the heat exchanger can happen when debris or corrosion keeps the ventilation from working properly. If it gets too clogged, the safety loop is triggered shutting down the equipment. If this is the case, Beachside Pool Service can clean the coils, replace the switch if necessary, and get you back in the swim.
Speaking of blockages, blockages at the burner tray can also cause problems. This is another case where you need expert troubleshooting followed up by a simple repair.
One scenario where you might want to consider a complete change out is if you want to switch from natural gas to propane. Depending on the model, this can be a simple change out of orifices that handle the gas to an entire rebuild.
Life of the Equipment

Pool heaters have a relatively short life. Expect to get about 5 years or so out of your pool heater. If you need a major repair and your pool heater is close to 5 years old, then it will probably make sense to replace it. When you look at replacement options, consider a heat pump or heat exchanger.
Heat pumps have a useful life of at least 10 years and often last much longer. Because our climate is perfectly suited for heat pumps, you also get energy savings by using a heat pump or heat exchanger. If your heat pump needs a major repair and almost 10 years old (or older) its time to make a replacement.

It’s interesting to read that pool heaters generally don’t have a long life. I recently found that the heater to my pool is broken. Replacing it is definitely something I’ll have to look into, as I wouldn’t want a cold pool for this coming spring.
Tyler if your heater is close to 5 years old, it might be time to replace it. If your heater is only a couple of years old it might be a minor fix.
