Swimming Pool Cleaning

Memorial Day kicks off the official swimming pool season. However, here in Orange County, people are already enjoying their swimming pools. Smart Orange County swimming pool owners know you cannot really enjoy your pool if it is not clean and the water balanced. Swimming pool cleaning requires special equipment, chemicals, and time.

 Equipment You Need

Swimming pool cleaning requires nets and poles with handles long enough to reach all areas of the swimming pool. In addition, you need:

  •  Brushes for tile
  • Pumice stone for hard water scale
  • Brushes for pool walls
  • Vacuum hose
  • Vacuum head

You also need a place to store all of this equipment!

Chemicals You Need

Your water chemistry will not maintain itself. You need to concern yourself with the pH level of the water. This refers to the acidity or alkalinity of the water. Keeping your swimming pool clean requires you to keep your pH within a narrow range. You also must worry about the amount of chlorine available to keep the water sanitized. This will require you to have a pool water test kit and learn to properly test your water. Some of the chemicals you will need are:

  •  Chlorine
  • Muratic Acid
  • Algaecide
  • Shock

These chemicals must also be stored safely as they can be harmful when not used properly.

How to Do It

Set aside some time for swimming pool cleaning. First, test your water and add the necessary chemicals. If you have large debris floating in the pool, this is the best time to remove it with your net. Then you will want to scrub the tile along the water line. If you have any signs of hard water scale this is the time to get out the pumice stone and scrub them away. Be very careful not to damage your tile.

Next, you will want to brush down the pool walls. This requires a different brush than the one you use to scrub the tile.

After the pool walls are clean, it is time to empty the skimmer basket. You should clean this basket every few days if you have trees or bushes close to your pool.

With the skimmer basket out, attach your vacuum hose and head and adjust the water pump to increase suction at the skimmer and decrease suction from the drain. When you vacuum, it is important that you vacuum all of the pool. You want to make sure that each vacuum pass overlaps the previous pass.

After vacuuming, you will want to turn your pump off and clean the pump basket. You may need to backwash the filter as well.

Once everything is back together and the equipment turned on go ahead and skim the surface of the pool again.

As you can see, swimming pool cleaning is a big job and if it is not done properly, you can have big problems on your hand.
