Swimming Pool Leak Detectives
Your Orange County swimming pool is losing water. You aren’t sure if it is simple evaporation or something more serious. As the water level slowly continues to drop, panic begins to build. Do you have a swimming pool leak? How can you tell if the water drop is due to the elements or a leak? If you suspect a leak in your Orange County swimming pool, it’s time to call in the experts. It’s time to call in the leak detectives at Beachside Pool Service.
Swimming Pool Evaporation or Swimming Pool Leak?
Water evaporates. The water in your swimming pool is no different. The rate of evaporation is based on factors such as:
- Surface area of pool
- Water temperature
- Air temperature
- Humidity levels
- Amount of wind
The greater the surface area, the faster water will evaporate. When the air is humid or the water temperature is cool, evaporation slows. When it is hot and dry, the water temperature rises with the air temperature and you can experience up to ¼” of evaporation in a week. It may seem like you need a degree in science and math to determine if your water loss is due to the atmosphere or a swimming pool leak. But it doesn’t have to be that complicated. Just grab a bucket!
Bucket Test for Pool Leak
If you want to do your own test before calling out the professionals, use the simple bucket test. In order for this test to be effective, you must perform the test over a 24 hour period and you must start the test before your system begins to cycle water in the morning. Here’s what you do.
- Grab a bucket and fill it with water from your swimming pool.
- Set the bucket on the first or second step of your pool.
- Wait for the water to stop moving in and around the bucket.
- Mark the water level inside the bucket.
- Mark the water level outside the bucket.
- Wait 24 hours and compare the two water levels.
If the water level inside the bucket and the water level in the pool have changed by the same amount, your water loss is due to evaporation. If the water level in the pool has dropped more than the water level in the bucket, you have a leak. If the water level in the bucket has dropped more than the water level in the pool, then some critter came along and took a drink from your bucket or your spouse is messing with you. In that rare instance, perform the test again.
