January is a time to make resolutions that will be broken before February. It doesn't…
Pool Service, Pool Heaters, and Pool Filters
Thanksgiving may be over, but it’s time to talk turkey about your pool. Winter in Southern California doesn’t mean that pool season is over. There’s no reason you can’t swim all year long if you’ve got the right Newport Coast pool service, pool heater and pool filter.
Pool Heaters
A good pool heater is crucial for swimming in the winter. Even Orange County swimming pools get chilly. But you can take the chill off the water and take a dip anytime you like if you have the right pool heater. In our area of the country, there are several options for heating your pool.
Pool Heater. Pool heaters use natural gas or propane to heat the water. There are also electric pool heaters, but they are not very common in Orange County. Pool heaters cost less than a heat pump to purchase and install but the operating costs are higher.
Heat Pump. This is a very popular option for heating pools in our area. A heat pump takes heat from the ambient air and captures it to heat your pool. These are very popular in our area of the country because the ambient temperature is generally warm enough to heat pool water. Heat pumps cost more upfront, but their operating costs are minimal. If you have a spa, a heat pump does not have the power to get your water hot enough.
Solar Heaters. Solar panels can generate enough energy to keep your pool warm from about April to October. They are not as effective in the cooler, winter months. Pool covers and pool blankets can help retain hear during the winter months and stretch your swimming season if you use solar to heat your pool.
Pool Filters
It doesn’t matter the time of the year, if you want to swim you need to keep the water free of debris and small particles. This is the job of your pool filter. Even if you are not swimming, the pump and filter need to operate in the winter months to recirculate the water and keep it clean. The most common filters in Newport Coast pools are DE filters, cartridge filters, and sand filters.
DE Filters. These filters use diatomaceous earth (DE) to filter the water. Diatoms are small single-cell algae that have silica cell walls. The silica walls provide the perfect media for trapping and removing very small particles from the water. DE is the workhorse in filtering water for a variety of uses from drinking water to waste water. DE filters must be periodically backwashed and the DE replaced to keep them operating properly.
Cartridge Filters. This filter style is popular for home pools, spas, and hot tubs. A pleated filtering media is contained in a cartridge. The cartridge can be rinsed periodically to remove large debris. Depending on the media, your cartridge may need to be replaced every year or two.
Sand Filters. These are more common with commercial pools than residential pools. Like a DE filter system they contain a filtering tank but instead of DE, sand is used instead. The sand traps the particles (large and small) before returning the water to the pool. Like DE filters, sand filters must be backwashed about once a month and the sand needs to be replaced every few years.
